Ruma Nowaz

Ruma’s work comprises mainly semi-abstract and abstract oil paintings, watercolours, collages and photographs.

Living in London, the fleeting impressions and textures of the surrounding urban environment and green spaces have influenced her paintings. Currently she is working on a series of paintings based on the River Thames. The paintings ‘Breeze, Blue Lagoon and Spring Dance’ are expressions of her response to enclosed natural spaces.

Ruma’s Indian background has also created a strong urge in her to be immersed in the vibrations and colours of nature, in its myriad forms. One of her main inspirations for her work is nature, landscapes and our interaction and response to it and in all her work, she seeks to convey an essence of this natural world.

Her recent foray into her Indian background has led her to explore Indian myths and legends from old Indian texts such as the Rg Veda and Upanishads. This new series of paintings explores some of these myths. These paintings such as 'Rahu and the Sun' and the 'Charioteer' use an abstract and expressionist colour language.

Her work has also been influenced by Journeys through a variety of landscapes including China, where the unusual shapes, colours and formation of the chinese mountains created an impression that has become etched into her imagination. She has also painted in Italy and Spain.

Ruma studied painting privately for a number of years prior to completing her degree in Fine Art-Painting at Middlesex University in 2006. Based at the Chocolate Factory, Ruma’s work has developed as a response to various landscapes, producing series of paintings such as the River Thames, Gladstone Park, Spanish and Chinese series. Her works have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in London, Spain and France and are to be found in many private collections.

The Chocolate Factories in Wood Green, London N22, are a landmark development and hub of excellence for the creative industries in the UK.

The project started in 1996 when Collage Arts, an arts development agency, moved into the Chocolate Factory on Clarendon Road and converted several derelict floors of the Factory into artist studios.

What followed was a high demand for creative space and in 2002, Collage Arts renovated Chocolate Factory 2 on Coburg Road, next door.
