Radha Binod Sharma

Radha Binod Sharma was born in Kamalpur,Tripura 1964. He was educated at the Kala- Bhavana, Santiniketan and Baroda 1989 and 1991, where he studied painting in the Faculty of Fine Arts. He was awarded the Elizabeth Greenshield Foundation award and the Charles Wallace award. This was followed by the prestigious Delfina trust residency award which took him to London for one year.

He has exhibited his work in the international arena; he has held ten solo exhibitions and numerous group shows.  In  his work Sharma represents the people, impediments and venues of marginal or urban life. He uses a distinctive palette which illuminates earthly objects and the protagonists with luminescent light. The red, green, yellow and blue are nuanced along a scale of emotive association stretching from somber to the lurid, from the rawness of a brick wall to the gaudy or neon lit figures reminiscent of Indian movie posters.  Sharma’s colors are shot through with psychedelic light of a fire flickering behind the surfaces of   pigment, his figures and objects assume, in consequence , the aura of portent and riddle. His paintings focus on ‘life on the edge’, lives which are dominated by egoistic   and unbridled desire which creates for the human participants the illusion of repose.  In the shadows sit the power- merchants, the brokers of  pleasure,  who ultimately  deliver to their recipients ‘a living death’ .

Radha Binod Sharma lives and works in London.

ABOUT US

The Chocolate Factories in Wood Green, London N22, are a landmark development and hub of excellence for the creative industries in the UK.

The project started in 1996 when Collage Arts, an arts development agency, moved into the Chocolate Factory on Clarendon Road and converted several derelict floors of the Factory into artist studios.

What followed was a high demand for creative space and in 2002, Collage Arts renovated Chocolate Factory 2 on Coburg Road, next door.
