I paint in oils and each work generally takes around three to four months to complete. I paint in a style that is both painterly and realistic. Each painting is made up of many layers of paint working through from the dark colours to the light. The slow drying process usefully allows time for reflection and study of a person either from reality, a photograph or combination of both. I believe that a portrait is more than just a painting; it becomes a family treasure – something that gets passed down through the generations and should never merely be the product of an hour or a day of an artist’s time. Portraits demand that an artist takes as long as it takes to truly capture the essence of a sitter.
Carol Tarn is a portrait artist. She paints in oils and will work to private commission. Carol's work is a mixture of commissioned and self generated projects. In addition to her regular commissioned work for private clients, Carol has a particular interest in Theatrical Portraiture and is creating a growing collection of paintings of actors from the London stage. Notable sitters have included actresses Celia Imrie and Greta Scacchi. Carol has exhibited widely and most recently her work has been selected for The Ashurst Emerging Artists Prize (2015) The Society Of Women Artists (2014 and 2015) and The Royal Society of British Artists (2016).
After a career in advertising with the American advertising agency Young and Rubicam, Carol studied at the Hampstead School of Art where she was taught by Wynn Jones, former head of painting at Byam Shaw School of Art. She has worked from her studio at the Chocolate Factory since 2004 building a successful portraiture and teaching practice.
As a teacher of portraiture, Carol has helped to develop the skills of numerous budding and more advanced pupils. Her small class sizes allow individual attention and her pupils appreciate the time she spends concentrating on traditional painting techniques. Pupils are encouraged to work on one composition over a period of weeks to fully utilize what they have learned.
